Sometimes big companies looking for specific consulting talent have really large insurance requirements for liability, E&O and others.  How do single proprietors deal with htis during the contracting phase?

In my practice (management consulting; strategy consulting) this has seldom come up as an issue.  I would expect in many practices this is a significant problem.

 

1.  Does the work justify the insurance premiums?  Is the client really worth the cost?

 

2.  Have you negotiated with the client?  Are they willing to waive or reduce the requirements?  The one time this was an issue I realized the client was using a generic consulting agreement and I pointed out the low risk associated with my project and they struck the insurance requirements from the contract.

 

3.  Assuming you qualify for the policies, is it possible to role the cost in to your proposal?

 

Since I don't have this as an issue I don't have other suggestions.
